The Other Side of the Story

A primary objective of Trouble in Zion is to show that in all conflicts there are always two perspectives.  It is never as cut and dry as “good guys” versus “bad guys”.   One of the most eye-opening experiences that came from making this film was meeting Missourians who had relatives who fought against the Mormons.  They are proud of their heritage and help give important perspectives on why things happened the way they did.

Charlie Peniston is a farmer from Davies County, Missouri.  His ancestors were some of the first settlers in the area. He is a descendant of William Peniston, who was involved in the infamous election day brawl in Gallatin, Missouri.

Douglas Doughty comes from a proud heritage of Missourians. He is a descendant of William F. Perry who fought with the Livingston County Militia and was involved in the battle at Haun’s Mill.
